"Off to the Races" -- Great Bike "Picture" Book!
October 17, 2013

$12 (inc. S/H)

[$12, postpaid in the US. Bump from 8/07.] Here's a super neat kids bike book---only it's not just for kids. "Off to the Races" is by Fred & M. Phleger, a husband and wife team. Hardcover, 8x10, 63 pages.

A bike pal of mine just rediscovered it at his mom's house and suddenly remembered first being sparked up for biking by reading it when he was a kid. He'd forgotten all about it until now. He showed it to me and I've been promoting it ever since.

The story and artwork shows a bike world of convivial versatility in all its glory and detail.

Really, it's all about CYCLOCROSS!

You'll be astonished! It's a tale of two brothers, one older, that starts with board track velodrome racing, moves on to randonneur riding with overnighting in a hostel, then riding to the weekend's races, and it ends with cyclocross over a stone wall. Yes, our heroes takes off their racks, lights and fenders to compete. It's a culture we'd do well to emulate. ...But at this point, our cyclocross scene seems to be what comes closest. (Other than perhaps the "urban bike party.") I'm just tickled to offer this book and to keep digging up fresh copies.

You know how they say that cyclocross is like a biker's circus? Well, check it out in the pics below!

It's a beginning reader's book but both the story and the artwork will charm an adult. The reading level says ages 4-8.

Here are a few scans from inside the book. The best cyclocross images you'll have to see when you get your own copy!

Awesome find Jeff. I'll have to get a copy for our shop.

One more to inspire kids (and the young at heart); a coloring book of bikes by noted NYC bike painter Taliah Lempert:

Description from the site:
"Get those kids coloring the world's most perfect machine.
This big, cool book is 11 x 14" with a 4 color front & back cover and 26 different colorable pages of bicycles."

Lovely addition to your library or to have around the house!
